A monthly foodletter
+ no beef with Epicurious, stanning Madhur Jaffrey, and the problem with the wine mom meme
Nice Pear: a monthly feminist foodletter | Issue #028 | April 2021
Hello!
You may have noticed that I’m not in your inbox as often as I once was. This newsletter was always an experiment, and I have loved writing it (almost) every week since last summer.
But my time is more in-demand than ever, and I have to prioritise paid work. I have more freelance work than I did this time last year. I’m also hoping to go to night school in September to get my NCTJ journalism qualification (fingers crossed I get funding). Additionally (and perhaps selfishly), relaxing restrictions in the UK mean I’m spending some much-needed time out of my flat, in the part or gardens with friends and family in the sunshine.
All of this to say (as you may have noticed) - this newsletter is moving to a monthly publication schedule, at least for the time being. Look out for Nice Pear in your inbox on the last Sunday of every month, with an original essay + links out to my favourite (mostly vegan) foodie reads.

If you’re new to this newsletter, you can read about it here & then forward it to all of your pals. If you’re enjoying Nice Pear you can always support it by becoming a paying subscriber, buying me a virtual cuppa, throwing some change in the tip jar, or just:

Things to read this month
No beef with Epicurious - In a move to more environmentally-sound content, the magazine has announced they are no longer publishing recipes containing beef.
Go to Basically for a guide to types of tofu - I tend to go for firm or extra firm, but silken is perfect for a scrambled egg dupe in your breakfast.
Essential reading on vegan cheese (now nothing like the old-feet-smelling stuff which was all that was available just a few years ago)
In news that should be surprising to no one, it turns out meat and dairy companies are up there with the fossil-fuel industry, when it comes to spending money on lobbying and ‘research’ against good climate policy.
Alicia Kennedy’s in-depth look at the history of veganism in the US
Impossible have reignited the old “what words can we use to describe plant-based meat” debate
I will forever stan Madhur Jaffrey
This rebuke to the general disapproval of pandemic weight (and diet culture/fatphobia more broadly) gain by Virginia Sole-Smith
Just an interesting long-read on the people who cook through entire recipe books (Julie & Julia style).
Where to find me
In The Independent with Celiac awareness week 2021: 13 best gluten free beers to cheers to.
This month I sent 18 pitches, got 6 rejections, and 2 commissions.
As always, you can find me @ZoePickburn on Twitter, Insta, and other social media, and you can say hello@zoepickburn.com with stories, commissions & foodie chit chat.
Thanks!
Zoe
